How to use it

  1. Install the runtime once, then a model: Whisper for breadth, Parakeet for speed. Both run on the Neural Engine and both work offline.
  2. Start a recording from the menu bar's Quick Record, a global shortcut, or a Ring button. Background recording takes no window at all.
  3. Turn on Auto-copy result and the transcript is on your clipboard the moment it finishes. With Accessibility granted it can type straight into the field you were in.
  4. Add names, product names and jargon under custom vocabulary. It biases the recognizer, which is the difference between a transcript you edit and one you paste.

Workflows

Dictate into anything

Put Voice Transcribe on a shortcut, press it in any text field, talk, press it again. The text is inserted where the caret was.

Notes from a call you were on

Background recording keeps it out of the way for the length of the call, and the transcript lands in your clipboard history, where it is searchable afterwards.

Read it back on the phone

Transcripts sync to Droppy for iPhone. The phone never records; it only reads what your Mac made.

Tips

  • Auto-detect is the right language setting for mixed or unknown speech; pick a fixed language only when you know every recording is in it.
  • Audio is deleted the moment the transcript exists. Nothing is kept and nothing is uploaded.
  • The lock screen chip shows the recording duration while you talk, and the transcription progress once you stop.
