Frequently asked questions

No. The notch is just one place Droppy lives. It is a full productivity layer for your Mac: a file tray, clipboard history, Droppy Cloud sharing, screen recording with an editor, window snapping, the Thunderstorm launcher, meeting controls and 41 optional Droplets. Add floating file trays, custom notch widgets and sync with Droppy for iPhone. It also adds an MCP server that lets AI apps like Claude and Cursor use Droppy, a menu bar Command Center and a floating music player, and DockDoor brings Dock previews and a window switcher from the Droplet Store. Droppy also works on Macs without a notch.
It depends what you want. The Boring Notch, Atoll and MewNotch are the best free options, Alcove focuses on media and live activities, while NotchNook and DynamicLake Pro also offer productivity tools, and DynamicLake Pro now adds a plugin Market. Droppy goes beyond the notch with a file tray, clipboard manager, media controls, screen recording, cloud sharing, system HUDs and 36 optional Droplets, for a one-time $9.99.
Yes. Droppy covers NotchNook's core, media controls, a drag and drop file tray, AirDrop and calendar, and adds a clipboard manager, Droppy Cloud share links and an extension ecosystem NotchNook does not have. Droppy is a one-time $9.99 versus NotchNook's $25 one-time or $3 a month.
DynamicLake Pro added plugins and a plugin Market in version 1.9.7. The Market lists 14 plugins, such as download progress, VPN status and meeting controls, and each one posts live activities built from DynamicLake's own parts: text, icons, progress bars and buttons. Droppy has 36 Droplets, from window snapping and screen capture to transcription and Obsidian editing. Each Droplet is a full feature with its own settings, and developers publish new ones through the Droplet Store.
Yes, The Boring Notch and Atoll are both free and open source. The trade-offs are an unsigned build for Boring Notch and beta-release changes for Atoll. Droppy is not free, but it is a one-time $9.99 with a 3-day free trial, and its extensions only run when you switch them on.
Yes. On notch-less Macs, iMacs, Mac minis and external displays, Droppy shows a Dynamic Island and lives in the menu bar. All apps in this comparison offer a non-notch mode; display selection and external-monitor behavior differ by app.
Choose Alcove for media controls, system alerts, calendar events, weather and Lock Screen widgets. Choose Droppy if you also want a file tray, clipboard history, cloud sharing, window snapping and 41 optional Droplets, for $9.99 instead of $14.99.

Reviewed October 12, 2026 using developer feature lists, release notes, App Store listings and public source code. Atoll is the publicly available 2.3.3 beta 3, not its older stable release. Amber indicates limited support for the feature. Gray dashes mean a capability is absent from the reviewed code or published feature set; closed-source apps have not been exhaustively tested. A feature delivered by a plugin or Droplet the developer lists counts, as DynamicLake's Market plugins do.
