AI Background Removal
BiRefNet, external runtimeRemove backgrounds with on-device AI directly from Droppy. After the one-time runtime setup, images are processed locally on your Mac for fast, private cutouts that keep fine detail.
What it does
- Runs entirely on-device
- Private, images never leave your Mac
- BiRefNet SOTA segmentation quality
- One-time runtime + model install
How to use it
- Install the runtime and the BiRefNet model once from its page in Settings, Store. After that it never touches the network again.
- Drop an image on the Shelf or the Basket and pick background removal from its actions. Thunderstorm can run it on a found image too.
- The result comes back as a cutout with real transparency, so it drops straight into Keynote, Figma or a message without a white box behind it.
Where it shows up

Workflows
Product shot to slide
Screenshot the product with Element Capture, drop the result on the Shelf, remove the background, then drag the cutout into your deck. Nothing leaves the Mac at any point.
A headshot with no studio
Drop a photo in, lift the subject, then use Element Capture's background and shadow controls to place it on a colour or a blurred wallpaper.
Tips
- It processes one image at a time. A second image queued while the first is running is refused rather than silently dropped.
- Very large images can time out. Scale the source down first and the cutout quality barely changes, because the model works at its own resolution anyway.
- The model is a few hundred megabytes. Removing the Droplet from its page deletes the runtime and the model with it.
