Live Activities, the Droppy way

A notification wants something from you. It slides in over your work, sits on top of whatever you were doing, and waits to be read and dismissed. That shape is right for a message from a person. It is wrong for a timer, a song, a download, or a battery quietly draining, because none of those is an event you deal with once. They are ongoing state, and state that keeps changing has no business tapping you on the shoulder every time it does.

Droppy takes the other road. Instead of turning ongoing things into alerts you have to chase, it pins them to the top center of the screen, right at the notch, in the spot your eyes already visit to read the clock. They sit there quietly, cost nothing while you ignore them, and answer in a single glance when you look up. That is what a live activity is supposed to be. Here is what Droppy actually puts up there, why each one earns its place, and which pieces are Droplets you switch on only if you want them.

Why the center beats a banner you chase

A banner gets one moment. It appears, and if you are deep in a build or a document, that moment slides past and the thing is gone into Notification Center with everything else you did not read. To answer a question as small as how much time is left, you now have to stop, go find it, and climb back into what you were doing. The interruption costs far more than the answer.

A live activity never has that problem, because it never leaves. It has a fixed address. The timer is always in the same place, so checking it is a flick of the eyes rather than a context switch. I made the longer case for this in live activities on the Mac. This piece is the practical half: the specific things Droppy keeps at the notch, and what makes each one worth the space.

The timer, right where your eyes already are

The timer is the cleanest example. Start one however you like, ask Siri, open the Clock app, or start it from Droppy. It does not matter which, because Droppy mirrors the native macOS timer instead of running a copy of its own. The same countdown the Clock app knows about shows up at the notch and ticks down live.

Collapsed, it is a small ring and a number beside the cutout. Hover, and it opens into a card with the full time and controls. When it reaches zero it tells you once, and that is the entire interaction. There is no app to leave open and no window to dig out from behind the others.

Music is pure state. You want to know what is on, nudge play or skip, sometimes see how far into the track you are, and you almost never want the whole music app back on top of your work to do any of it.

Droppy keeps the current track at the notch instead: live album artwork, the title and artist, and a progress bar that fills as the song plays. The controls are one hover away. It follows Apple Music or Spotify, and the artwork is the real thing, so the notch quietly takes on the color of whatever you have on.

A battery that warns once, then gets out of the way

Battery is the activity that proves the whole idea. Most of the time you do not care about it, so most of the time it says nothing at all. It sits at the notch as a calm, glanceable number. Only when you slip into low territory does it change color and speak up, one time, so you can find a charger before the Mac makes the decision for you.

That is the line between glanceable state and an alert. A healthy charge stays green and easy to ignore. A low charge turns amber and asks for a hand. Same slot, same activity, two volumes, and the loud one only arrives when it genuinely helps.

The ones you opt into: transcription, coding, and Notify Me

Not every tool belongs on every Mac, so a good part of Droppy arrives as Droplets, the optional add-ons you turn on one at a time. I wrote about that whole approach in Droplets. Three of them are live activities in their own right:

  • Voice Transcribe turns speech into text and shows its progress live at the notch while it works, so a long recording becomes a moving bar you can watch instead of a spinner you have to trust.
  • The AI Coding HUD watches coding agents like Claude Code or Codex running in your terminal and pins their progress up top, so you can look away and still catch the moment the agent finishes or needs you.
  • Notify Me watches for one specific thing, a message from a certain person or a notification you are waiting on, and pings you the instant it lands instead of making you keep checking.
The honest part: the timer, now playing, and battery activities are on out of the box. Voice Transcribe, the AI Coding HUD, and Notify Me are Droplets, off until you switch them on, so the notch only ever holds the things you asked for.

Calm by default, loud only when it matters

The thread running through all of these is restraint. A live activity that keeps moving to win your attention is just a notification in a better outfit. Droppy's activities hold still, update quietly, and save the color change or the single ping for the one moment it actually earns your eyes. They respect Reduce Motion too, so if you turn that on the movement stops and the same information is there as a still glance. Putting all of this at the notch is not about building a dashboard to stare at. It is about giving the ongoing parts of your day one fixed, quiet home so they stop interrupting the rest of it. That is the whole idea behind Droppy, and the timer is a good place to start.
