Droppy 16.1.2 beta 7: a shorter tour and twelve fixes

The Droppy 16.1.2 beta 7 release card, made from real screenshots of what is new.

Beta 6 was meant to fix the hello at the start of the welcome tour, and on a MacBook Air it didn't do enough. This beta finds where the cost really was, shortens the tour itself, and clears out the bugs you reported on The Trench and in Discord.

  • 12tour steps at most, down from 23 pages
  • 10 ptsless GPU while the hello writes
  • 12fixes since beta 6

Where the GPU actually went

While the hello writes, the tour card waits behind it out of focus. Every frame, macOS drew that whole card again, blurred it, and sampled it once more for the glass word to bend. The card never changes during those seconds, so Droppy now draws the blurred card once and reuses it.

Measured on screen over eight paired replays, the hello now costs less GPU than the tour sitting still, about ten points below beta 6. Captures of the word at three moments look the same as before, and the card comes back into focus exactly as it did.

A shorter welcome tour

The welcome tour had grown to as many as 23 pages, one feature at a time. It now has at most 12 steps, and each step shows a few related features together, so Files covers the shelf and Transform, and Music covers the notch player and the floating one.

Every step still runs on the same real Mac with Droppy's real surfaces on its screen. The camera moves from one feature to the next on its own while the words and choices stay where they are, and Continue takes you to the next step.

Settings and the Dock

Settings now opens at the size you last gave it, also after quitting Droppy, instead of snapping back to its default. Opening Droppy again while it runs no longer puts a second Droppy icon in the Dock next to Settings, or leaves one behind after Settings closes.

Shortcuts and Clipboard

Shortcuts recorded with the Hyper key now save as the Hyper chord instead of F18, the key Caps Lock is remapped to. Cells and text copied from Excel, Word, Numbers and other document apps land in Clipboard as text, with their formatting kept for pasting back.

Cleaner and Thunderstorm

Cleaner's widget now keeps the shelf open while it waits for an app, so you can go to Finder, pick one and drop it. Dragging an app to the notch also opens the shelf straight on Cleaner. Thunderstorm's notes window no longer draws a square outline while you search.

Everything else

The Now Playing and timer cards on the Lock Screen now sit clear of a lock screen message instead of mirroring it in their glass. The Droplet Store's updates button stays put in a narrow window, and Droppy Sync no longer encrypts a file again on every failed upload.

Long text clips no longer keep a CPU core busy as you scroll past them, and the first droplet you add from disk no longer freezes Droppy while its one-time notice waits for you.

After wake, the screen's brightness fade made the notch settle itself over and over while it ran. It now settles once, after the fade is done.
