Keep the music close and your work in front

The music app rarely needs to be the main window. You open it to choose something, then return to writing, designing or whatever the day needs. The interruptions come later: a track to skip, a lyric to check, a video that is too quiet beside the music. Each is a small job that can pull you out of the larger one.

Droppy keeps those jobs near the top of the screen. Its media widget handles playback, the Lyrics droplet gives the current song its words, and Audio Control balances sound between apps. They solve three different problems, so you can use the parts you need without turning the shelf into a permanent music dashboard.

Direct answer: start music in Apple Music, Spotify or a supported browser, then use Droppy's media widget for playback. Enable Lyrics in Settings, Store for timed words when available. Enable Audio Control and grant System Audio Recording to set separate app levels. Your music service remains the player; Droppy keeps its useful controls within reach.

The song stays with you. Its window can stay behind your work.
The music controls stay close to your work.

Begin with transport, not a bigger player

Play a track in your usual app and open Droppy's media widget. The title and artwork tell you what is playing; play, pause and skip handle the frequent changes. The progress control is useful when you want to hear a section again without searching for the original window.

If you often have several media apps open, choose the intended default music app in Droppy's media settings. Check the displayed title before changing playback. A browser video and a music app can both offer a media session, and the source you want to control should be the one shown.

Give Apple Music the controls it supports

When Apple Music is the active source, the expanded card can do more than transport. Playing Next shows the upcoming order, and its actions let you play a song now or put it next. The card's configurable side buttons offer Queue, Favorite, Shuffle, Repeat and Source.

Choose the two actions you actually use. Queue and Source suit someone who often changes the order and the speaker. Favorite and Repeat may suit someone listening through albums. These are Apple Music features, not a claim that every other service exposes the same queue or library controls.

Live album artwork is another optional part of that experience. It depends on compatible motion artwork being available for the release. A static cover is the right result when there is none. Music does not need moving artwork to remain useful at the top of the screen.

Open the words only when you want them

With Lyrics enabled, an L badge appears beside a track when matching timed lyrics are found. Open it and the current line follows playback beside the media widget. The panel uses the companion space, so you can read along without rearranging your pinned widgets. Auto-expand is available if you prefer the panel to open whenever words are found.

Lyrics works from the current media information rather than requiring one particular music service. That includes supported browser playback, although a video's title can be less useful for finding the correct song than a music app's metadata. New, obscure, live or instrumental tracks may have no matching timed lyrics.

The lookup uses LRCLIB and sends track details needed to find the song. Turning Lyrics off stops those requests. Missing words are a limit of the available timed source, not a reason to interrupt your listening with a guessed match.

Balance the music against everything else

Playback controls change the track. Audio Control changes how loud an app is relative to other apps. Switch it on, allow System Audio Recording when macOS asks, and start some audio. Active apps appear with their own sliders, so the music can sit below a tutorial or call without lowering both together.

Turn on Remember volumes if you want those levels to return between sessions. Show paused apps keeps useful rows available after playback stops, and Include system sounds adds a separate level for alerts. The master volume still affects the overall output, so use the app sliders to establish a comfortable balance first.

Audio Control needs macOS 14.2 or newer and uses macOS audio taps locally. Its permission name describes what the operating system allows; the mixer uses the audio stream to adjust levels. It does not turn your listening into a recording file. It also is not a promise to route different apps to different speakers.

Keep the controls available when the Mac is locked

Droppy's Lock Screen media presentation carries the current track, playback controls and supported lyrics into a place you can use away from the desk. It is helpful when music keeps playing while you make coffee or read something on paper. You do not need to unlock solely to pause a song.

macOS still owns authentication. The media presentation does not unlock documents or make the desktop available. Think of it as continuing the listening controls you already use, with the same limits of the source and the lyrics available for that track.

Optionally include the Apple TV

If the music is playing on an Apple TV instead, Droppy 16 can pair with it and bring its Now Playing information and transport into the media widget. Open Settings, Live Activities, enable Apple TV Now Playing under Media Controls, select the television and complete the PIN pairing shown on its screen.

This controls what the Apple TV is already playing. It is not streaming the Mac's audio to the television, and it is not a replacement for the full remote's navigation and text entry. Keep this part optional: the everyday setup of media, lyrics and app levels works without an Apple TV.

Sources and availability

Checked October 10, 2026: the Lyrics and Audio Control handbook pages document their setup and limits. The Apple Music guide covers its queue and card controls; the Apple TV guide covers pairing. This workflow uses features available in stable Droppy 16 and does not require the newer floating player from the nightly channel.
