Plug a MacBook into a monitor and macOS mostly does the right thing. Mostly. Then the questions start: why is the menu bar on both screens, why did that window open on the laptop you were not looking at, why does dragging a file to the left make the pointer pop out on the right, and where did your notch utilities go on a display that has no notch.
I build a notch app, and a decent share of my support inbox turns out to be none of my business in the best way: not app bugs, just multi-display macOS settings nobody ever explains in one place. So this is that one place. Main display, the multiplying menu bar, arrangement, clamshell mode, scaled resolutions, and then the notch-specific part at the end.
What "main display" actually decides
Open System Settings, click Displays, and select one of your screens. There is a dropdown labeled "Use as", and one of its options is "Main display". Exactly one screen holds that title at a time, and it controls more than the name lets on:
- Desktop icons live there. Files saved to the desktop pile up on the main display first.
- The Dock parks there by default. With separate Spaces on it will follow you if you push the pointer firmly into another screen's bottom edge, but home base is the main display.
- Freshly launched apps tend to open there, unless they remember a previous window position.
- If you turn off separate Spaces, the only menu bar is there.
The rule of thumb is boring but correct: make the screen your eyes spend the most time on the main display. If you bought a 27 inch monitor to be your workspace, promote it and let the MacBook be the sidecar. Almost every "windows keep opening on the wrong screen" complaint I hear traces back to a laptop that stayed main out of inertia.
Why the menu bar is on every display
The menu bar showing up on multiple displays is not a bug, and your monitor is innocent. It is a setting: System Settings, then Desktop & Dock, then scroll down to the Mission Control section and find "Displays have separate Spaces". It ships turned on.
With it on, each display is its own little world. Every screen gets its own set of Spaces, its own full screen apps, and its own menu bar. The bar on the display you are actively working on renders at full strength while the others dim slightly, which is macOS quietly telling you which world has focus. Put a video full screen on the monitor and the laptop stays completely usable. That single behavior is why Apple made this the default back in OS X Mavericks in 2013.
Turn it off and you get the older model: one menu bar on the main display only, and one giant Space stretched across all screens. Full screen an app and every other display goes dark and useless. A few people genuinely want this, usually because they span one enormous audio or video timeline across two monitors. Everyone else should leave it on.
One warning. Toggling the setting requires logging out and back in before it takes effect, so do not flip it five minutes before a call.
Arrange displays like your actual desk
Back in System Settings, Displays, click Arrange. You get draggable thumbnails of every connected screen, and macOS treats their edges as the seams your pointer crosses.
Make the arrangement match physical reality. Monitor raised above the laptop on a stand? Stack the thumbnails vertically. Monitor to the left of the laptop? Drag it left. This sounds too obvious to write down, and yet the default arrangement after plugging in a new monitor is frequently wrong, which is exactly why moving the mouse right sometimes teleports the pointer in from the wrong edge.
Vertical alignment matters too. If the monitor thumbnail sits too high relative to the laptop, the pointer only crosses over in a narrow band where the two rectangles overlap, and everywhere else it slams into an invisible wall. Line the shared edge up with where the physical bezels actually meet.
Drag and drop is where sloppy arrangement really bites. A file drag is a committed gesture; if the path from screen A to screen B takes a detour your arm did not expect, you drop the file somewhere stupid or give up mid-drag. - Each display renders its own menu bar, active one bright.
- The external screen has no camera housing to anchor to.
- Apps stay on the laptop or paint an island in the same spot.

Clamshell mode in one minute
Clamshell mode is the lid-closed setup: MacBook shut, external display doing all the work. macOS switches into it automatically when three things are true: the MacBook is connected to power, an external keyboard and a mouse or trackpad are connected, and a display is attached. Close the lid and everything migrates to the monitor.
Wake it with a key press or a mouse click, not by opening the lid. And give the machine some airflow; a closed MacBook running hard vents everything through the hinge.
Notice what clamshell does to the notch conversation: it deletes it. The built-in display is asleep, so anything anchored to the hardware notch is asleep with it. Whatever utilities you rely on up there either exist on the external monitor or they do not exist at all. Hold that thought for two sections.
Scaled resolutions and when "More Space" is worth it
Select a display in System Settings, Displays, and you get a row of presets running from Larger Text to More Space. What they control is the size of the virtual canvas macOS draws before handing it to the panel.
Concrete numbers help. A 27 inch 4K monitor has 3840 by 2160 physical pixels. The pixel-perfect option is "looks like 1920 by 1080": every point maps to exactly four pixels, everything is razor sharp, and everything is comically large. The popular choice is "looks like 2560 by 1440", which is More Space territory. To pull it off, macOS renders a 5120 by 2880 image internally and scales it down to the panel. You get the room. You pay with a little GPU work and a slight softness that mostly shows up in fine text, if you go looking for it.
My take: on a 27 inch 4K screen, More Space is worth it, because the pixel-perfect setting wastes the monitor. If the softness genuinely bothers you, the honest fix is a 5K panel like the Apple Studio Display, which shows the same 2560 by 1440 layout at an exact 2x with no scaling at all. That sharpness is most of what you are paying for.
Each display keeps its own setting, so scale the laptop and the monitor independently and ignore anyone who tells you they must match.
Notch utilities on a screen with no notch
Now the part that overlaps with what I do all day. Notch apps anchor themselves to the top center of the built-in display, using the camera housing as a landmark. An external monitor has no housing, so every app in this category has to pick a strategy, and there are really only two.
Strategy one: stay home. Some apps treat the physical notch as the whole point. Atoll is the clearest example: it requires an actual notch, so it exists on the built-in display and nowhere else. On a laptop alone that is a perfectly coherent choice. Add a monitor and everything the app does stays on the small screen; go clamshell and it has nowhere to be at all.
Strategy two: draw your own. The other approach is to paint a small island at the top center of any screen that lacks a cutout, the same reframing the iPhone's Dynamic Island proved in 2022: the landmark matters, not the hardware. Droppy takes this route, floating a pill in the notch position on notchless displays so the same tray, timers, and media controls exist on any screen, which is what "works with or without a notch" on the site means in practice. One related note: notch hiding utilities like TopNotch are a built-in-display concern only. They blend the cutout into a black menu bar, and an external monitor gives them nothing to blend. If your goal is making the notch invisible rather than useful, that is a different setup entirely.
Tips for mixed setups
Small things that compound over a workday:
- Keep the drop zone consistent across displays. If dragged files land at the top center of one screen, they should land at the top center of every screen. One gesture, any display, zero thinking.
- Do your menu bar clicking on the display you face. Menu bar extras render on every bar, but on a 14 inch built-in screen the notch swallows the overflow while the external shows everything. Prune ruthlessly either way; the menu bar cleanup guide covers how.
- Promote the monitor to main display if that is where you actually look. New windows and desktop clutter will land where your eyes already are.
- Match the arrangement to the desk, including height. Pointer crossings should happen where the physical bezels meet, not where a default guessed.
- Test clamshell before you rely on it. Close the lid once and check that the tools you reach for survived the built-in display going away.
- When a window vanishes, hit Mission Control with ⌃↑. With separate Spaces on, each display shows its own Spaces along the top, and the runaway window is on one of them.
Ten minutes, once
None of this is deep configuration. Set the main display, leave separate Spaces on unless you span timelines, drag the arrangement until it matches the furniture, pick a scaled resolution per screen, and make sure the utilities you depend on exist on every display, lid open or closed.
Then stop. The whole point of a MacBook with an external monitor is that you quit thinking about which screen you are on, and the best multi-display setup is the one you never notice again.
