Dynamic Island on the Mac: how to get it, and whether you should

In September 2022, Apple shipped the iPhone 14 Pro and pulled off a genuinely great magic trick. The screen still had a hole in it, a pill-shaped cutout for the camera and Face ID sensors, but the software treated that hole as a stage. Music curls around it. Timers count down inside it. An incoming call stretches the pill wide, and a long press expands it into a small control panel. Apple called it the Dynamic Island, and the illusion holds because OLED black and hardware black are indistinguishable: you cannot tell where the sensors end and the pixels begin.

The Mac never got it. MacBooks have carried a notch since 2021, and nearly four years after the island debuted, macOS still treats that notch as a void the menu bar politely flows around. No timers, no music, no live activities. I find that gap strange enough that I wrote a separate essay about it.

Third-party apps filled the gap instead, and full disclosure right away: I build one of them, Droppy. This post is my honest attempt at the question I get asked most often. Can you get a Dynamic Island on a Mac, and should you bother?

What the Dynamic Island actually is

The pill replaced the iPhone notch, which had sat static and useless since 2017. Instead of pretending the cutout wasn't there, iOS drew black interface around it and animated the whole region as one object: waveforms while music plays, a countdown during a timer, a glowing dot during a call, sports scores and ride ETAs once third-party live activities arrived.

Strip away the marketing and the island is three ideas stacked on top of each other.

First, background state gets a permanent address. Whatever keeps running while you do something else, a song, a timer, a call, a delivery, lives at the top center of the screen. Always the same spot. You never hunt for it.

Second, the hardware cutout anchors that address. The sensors were going to occupy the space anyway, so the software claims the surrounding pixels and turns a compromise into a feature.

Third, it is glanceable first and interactive second. The compact island shows a sliver of state. A long press expands it into controls. Most of the time you just look at it, which is the point.

Notice that none of these ideas require a phone. Which makes it genuinely odd that macOS, whose laptops have an actual cutout sitting in unused menu bar space, does nothing with any of them.

What translates to a laptop

I have built around the Mac notch for a while now and used every competing app I could find, so here is my scorecard. Roughly half of the island concept survives the trip:

  • Glanceable now-playing. Album art peeking out of the notch tells you what's playing without a single click. On phone or Mac, this is the best island feature, and it costs zero screen space because the notch flanks were doing nothing anyway.
  • Timers and countdowns. A timer at the top center is exactly as useful on a laptop as on a phone, and easier to read than the small menu bar text macOS gives a running Clock app timer.
  • Drop zones at a fixed landmark. This one is Mac-only and it's the sleeper hit. Dragging files between windows means aiming at targets that move around. A shelf that lives at the notch never moves, so drag muscle memory actually forms. The iPhone island cannot do this at all.
  • Quiet status. Screen recording running, battery low, meeting starting in five minutes. Things you want to notice without being interrupted by them.

Everything on that list is something you glance at, not something you operate. Keep that distinction in mind, because it explains the entire next section.

What does not translate

The Mac already has a menu bar. Half the island's jobs exist on the iPhone because iOS has nowhere else to put persistent state. macOS does: the menu bar has been Mac furniture since 1984 and has carried clocks, battery percentages, and status icons for decades, and Control Center's now-playing widget is one click away. An island on a Mac competes with furniture that already works. If your menu bar setup already answers "what is playing" and "when is my next meeting", an island adds a second place to look, not a first.

A pointer is not a thumb. On the iPhone, the island sits where your eyes rest and one thumb-stretch away. On a Mac, the pointer is usually mid-screen doing actual work, and a trip to the top center is a deliberate act. The screen edge does catch your overshoot, so it's a forgiving target once you commit, but the round trip still loses to the play-pause key (F8 on most MacBooks) for anything you do twenty times a day. Media keys beat hovering an island for skip and pause. Every time.

Windows already show state. An island call banner is clever on a phone where one app owns the whole screen. On a Mac, FaceTime pops a notification with accept and decline buttons, and the app is probably visible anyway. Some island interactions are solutions to a constraint the Mac simply does not have.

So the real case for a Mac island is narrower than the iPhone version. It earns its place on glanceable media, timers, file drops, and quiet status, and it should stay out of the way for everything else. The apps that understand this feel native. The ones that port the entire iPhone behavior wholesale feel like a costume.

Setting one up

Mechanically, every Mac island app works the same way. It draws a black shape at the top center of your display, either hugging the physical notch or standing in for one, and layers its interface around and beneath that shape. The good ones are indistinguishable from hardware until they move.

Daily use comes down to three gestures:

  • Hover to expand. Push the pointer into the notch area and the island grows into a panel: file shelf, media controls, calendar, whatever you've enabled. Move away and it shrinks back to the bare shape.
  • Drag files to it. Mid-drag, the island reveals a drop zone. Drop the file and it sits on a shelf until you drag it out somewhere else, halfway between a clipboard and a desk.
  • Media morphing. Play something in Music or Spotify and album art appears on one side of the notch, a small waveform on the other. Hover for the transport controls.

Setup takes about five minutes across the whole category: download, move to Applications, launch, grant the handful of permissions the app requests, then push your pointer at the top of the screen.

My one piece of configuration advice: turn things off. Every app in this category ships more modules than any single person needs, and an island earns its keep by being quiet. Start with media and the file shelf, live with it for a week, then add more only if you miss something.

As for which app, several are good and they emphasize different things. NotchNook pioneered the widget-style notch and remains the feature-rich paid option at $25 one-time or $3 a month. The Boring Notch is free and open source, with the tradeoffs of an unsigned build and an always-on visualizer that shows up in battery stats. Droppy, mine, leans on files and clipboard alongside media, costs a one-time $6.99, and, most relevant here, needs no physical notch at all: on an iMac, a Mac mini, or an external monitor it draws its own Dynamic Island pill on any display. Who should skip it

An island is furniture. Buy it only if you'll actually sit in it.

Skip it if you live in full screen apps, because the island's entire value is peripheral vision and full screen mode removes the periphery. Skip it if you run zero background state, no music while working, no timers, no files shuttling between apps. There would be nothing for the island to show, and an empty stage is just a black rectangle with opinions.

Keyboard maximalists should pass too. If your windows are tiled and your pointer is a last resort, hover-driven UI fights your whole setup.

If you're on the fence, start free. The Boring Notch will tell you within a week whether the island idea fits how you work, and only then is it worth weighing what the paid apps add. That is the order I'd suggest even as someone who is, let's say, contractually enthusiastic about one of the paid ones.

The Dynamic Island was Apple admitting that a hardware compromise could carry real software. The Mac has hauled the same compromise around since 2021 with none of the software. Filling that gap yourself takes five minutes, and done tastefully it gives the top of your screen an actual job.
