Your MacBook opens and closes like an iPhone Duo

Close the lid and what the screen shows folds down onto the hinge like a Duo, dimming and softening with depth as it goes. Open it and the picture lifts back up, tracking the hinge one to one on MacBooks with a lid angle sensor. Without the sensor, the fold plays on its own the moment the display wakes. Pick the filmed Duo pace or a quicker one, and preview the whole fold from Settings.

How to use it

  1. Switch it on and close the lid: what the screen shows dims, softens and folds down onto its hinge as the lid comes down, then the display sleeps as usual.
  2. Open the lid and the picture lifts back up with it, at the pace of your hand on MacBooks with a hinge sensor.
  3. Pick a tempo for the fold that plays on its own: Duo is the pace of Apple's iPhone Duo animation, Brisk and Quick are faster.

See it without closing anything

Press Play fold on its Settings page. The screen you are looking at folds down on the filmed curve, holds a moment, and lifts again.

Tips

  • The hinge sensor is in the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and every MacBook Pro since, and in MacBook Airs from the M2 on. Without it, the fold plays when the display wakes after the lid was closed.
  • Allow Screen Recording and the fold carries exactly what your screen showed. Without it, the panels show your wallpaper.
  • Stop the lid part-way and the fold finishes on its own, so the screen is never left half folded while you work.
