Is the new MacBook Pro worth it for the Dynamic Island?

The MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR display is the first Mac with Apple's own Dynamic Island. It starts at $2,899, pre-orders opened on October 28, and it reaches stores on November 6. If the island is the thing that caught your eye, here is the honest answer before you spend that much: buy this Mac for its screen and its chips, not for the island.

Short answer

Worth it if you need a new pro laptop anyway, work in HDR, or want Touch on a Mac. Not worth it for the island alone: Droppy puts a Dynamic Island on the Mac you already have, on any display, for $9.99 once.

What the $2,899 gets you

The island is one line in Apple's announcement. The rest is a serious machine: a tandem OLED PROLED XDR display at up to 2,000 nits for HDR and SDR, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 120Hz ProMotion, Touch built into the display panel for the first time on a MacBook Pro, M5 Pro or M5 Max with up to 128GB of memory, and support for up to four external displays with M5 Max.

What the island itself does

Apple's Dynamic Island on the Mac is the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. You can search your Mac, ask questions, answer calls and control music from it, and Live Activities show things like an incoming AirDrop. Spotlight appears there only when Siri AI is available and turned on, and Siri AI is a beta in macOS 27.2, in a limited set of languages. Apple has not announced the island for any other Mac or for external displays.

That is useful, and it is also a fairly short list next to what an island app already does on the Mac: a launcher that searches your Mac and acts on what it finds, files you drop on it, music with lyrics, widgets, system HUDs, meetings and coding agents. I build one of those apps, Droppy, which has drawn a Dynamic Island on every Mac since January 9, 2026, so weigh my view accordingly. The full side by side is in Apple's island vs Droppy.

Facts about the MacBook Pro come from Apple's announcement of October 28, 2026, read on November 2.

Who should buy it

  • Anyone due for a new pro laptop, especially from an Intel or M1 MacBook Pro.
  • Video editors and photographers who work in HDR or need deep blacks.
  • People who have wanted Touch on a Mac.
  • Anyone who wants Siri AI right in the island.

Who should not buy it for the island

If your current Mac is fast enough and the island is the main draw, keep your money. An island app gives you the Dynamic Island today, on the Mac and the displays you already own, and lets you decide on a new Mac later for its own reasons. Droppy runs on macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel, and the trial is free for 3 days.

The verdict

  • Buy the PROLED MacBook Pro for the display, Touch and M5 Pro or Max. The island is a bonus.
  • Want the island? Add Droppy to the Mac you have, for $9.99 once.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the MacBook Pro with the Dynamic Island?

In the US it starts at $2,899 for the 14 inch with M5 Pro, $3,399 for the 16 inch with M5 Pro, $4,499 for the 14 inch with M5 Max and $4,799 for the 16 inch with M5 Max. Pre-orders opened on October 28, 2026 and it reaches stores on November 6.

Is the Dynamic Island the only new thing on the PROLED MacBook Pro?

No. Apple's announcement leads with the PROLED XDR display: tandem OLED, up to 2,000 nits for HDR and SDR, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 120Hz ProMotion. It is also the first MacBook Pro with Touch, built into the display panel, and it comes with M5 Pro or M5 Max.

Can I get the Dynamic Island without buying a new Mac?

Not Apple's, which comes only on this MacBook Pro. An app like Droppy draws its own Dynamic Island on any Mac on macOS 14 or later, including MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini and external displays, for $9.99 once.

What does Apple's Mac Dynamic Island do?

Apple calls it the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI: you can search your Mac, ask questions, answer calls and control music there. Spotlight shows up in it only when Siri AI is available and enabled, and Siri AI is a beta in macOS 27.2.

Should I wait for a cheaper Mac with the Dynamic Island?

Apple has not announced one, so there is no date to wait for. If the island is what you want, an app gets you one today on the Mac you have, and you can still buy a new Mac later for its own reasons.
