Yoink is the shelf app a lot of Mac users start with: drag a file, drop it on the shelf at the edge of the screen, and pick it up again when the destination is ready. It costs $8.99 once and Eternal Storms still updates it. If it does everything you need, keep it. This guide is for when you want the shelf and the rest of the trip: sending, converting and sharing what you parked.

The best Yoink alternative in 2026 is Droppy if you are on macOS 14 or later and want the shelf to also send, convert and share files; stay with Yoink if you are on an older macOS or only ever need a place to park a drag.
What Yoink does well
Yoink is a mature app and it shows in the right ways. It is small (13.5 MB on the Mac App Store), it starts fast, and it still supports Macs back to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Version 3.7.6 came out on July 31, 2026. We read its product page and Mac App Store listing on October 27, 2026, and this is what it offers:
- A shelf that appears when you drag, at the edge of the screen or next to your cursor.
- Modifier keys while dropping: hold Option to force a copy, Command to force a move.
- Clipboard history and a shortcut to recall recent items.
- Quick Look, Handoff and Continuity Camera support.
- A Share extension, a Finder Quick Action and Automator support for getting files in.
- An iPhone and iPad version, sold separately for $5.99.
The price is fair, and the direct version has a 28-day trial, which is generous. If you live on an older Mac that cannot run macOS 14, Yoink is the right answer and nothing below changes that.
Where people outgrow a plain shelf
A shelf solves the first half of a file handoff: holding the file while you find the place it goes. The second half is usually one of four things. You send it to someone, you shrink or convert it first, you need a link for a person who is not on a Mac, or you need the same file on your iPhone. With a plain shelf, each of those is another app: the share sheet, an image converter, a transfer website, a cloud folder.
That is the gap Droppy was built around. The file tray is the same idea as Yoink's shelf, and the row of Quick Action tiles under it is the second half.
How Droppy's file tray works
Start dragging any file, folder, image or text selection, and either move it to the top of the screen or give it a shake. The tray opens to take it and holds it until you drag it out, drop it on a tile, or clear it.
- Where it lives is your choice. Settings, File tray asks one question: in the notch, floating, or both. Both is the default, and on Macs without a notch the tray opens from the top of the screen.
- The floating tray comes to you. Shake while dragging, set it to appear the instant a drag starts, or reveal it with a key you hold. Shake sensitivity runs from low to very high.
- Several trays at once. Turn on Multiple floating trays and each shake brings a new one, so you can sort a pile into destinations in a single pass. The Tray Switcher moves between them.
- Preview without opening. Press Space in the floating tray to preview a file.
- Pins survive clean-up. Unpinned files can leave the tray on a timer you choose; pinned ones stay.
- Copy or move, your rule. Dragging out works like Finder: same disk moves, another disk copies. Protect originals makes it always copy.
Then the part a plain shelf does not do. Drop the pile on a tile: AirDrop opens with the files attached, Droppy Cloud uploads them and puts a link on your clipboard, Mail and Messages start a message with them, and iCloud Drive files them away. Transform is always the first tile, so a heavy screen recording can become a smaller MP4 before it goes anywhere.

Switching from Yoink in five minutes
- Download Droppy and open it. The trial starts with every feature and asks for no card.
- Quit Yoink, and remove it from System Settings, General, Login Items so the two shelves do not compete for the same drag.
- In Droppy's Settings, File tray, pick Floating if you want it to feel like Yoink, or keep Both.
- Set the shake sensitivity, or turn on Instant appear if you liked a shelf that shows up the moment you drag.
- If you used Option to force copies in Yoink, turn on Protect originals under Settings, General, File handling.
- Under Settings, General, Quick Actions, pick the two to four tiles you send to most.
When to stay with Yoink
Honest answer: if your Mac is on macOS 13 or older, if you already pay for Setapp and Yoink is in it, or if you want a single-purpose shelf and nothing else, Yoink is a good app and you should keep it. Droppy is the better buy when the shelf is the start of a handoff rather than the end of one, and when you would like one app to replace the shelf, the transfer site and the converter.
The verdict
- Pick Yoink for older Macs, Setapp subscribers, and anyone who wants a shelf and nothing else.
- Pick Droppy for a shelf that also sends, converts and shares, plus clipboard history and a free iPhone beta, for $9.99 once.
Frequently asked questions
Is Yoink free?
No. Yoink for Mac costs $8.99 once on the Mac App Store, and the version sold directly by Eternal Storms Software has a 28-day free trial. It is also included in a Setapp subscription. Yoink for iPhone and iPad is a separate $5.99 purchase.
Is Yoink still updated in 2026?
Yes. Yoink 3.7.6 for Mac came out on July 31, 2026, and it still runs on macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later.
What is the best Yoink alternative for Mac?
Droppy, if you want the same drag-and-park shelf plus what happens after it: one-drop AirDrop, Mail and share links, file conversion with Transform, clipboard history and a free iPhone app in TestFlight beta. It costs $9.99 once for 2 Macs and needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
Does Droppy need a MacBook with a notch?
No. On a Mac without a notch, and on external displays, the file tray opens from the top of the screen in the same way, and the floating file tray comes to your cursor on any display.
Can I run Yoink and Droppy at the same time?
You can, but both react when you start dragging a file, so two shelves will compete for the same drag. Try Droppy for its 3-day trial with Yoink quit, then keep the one you prefer.
Does dragging a file out of Droppy move it or copy it?
It works like Finder: dragging to the same disk moves the file and dragging to another disk copies it. Turn on Protect originals under Settings, General, File handling and Droppy always copies instead.
