The Mac's emoji panel is a small daily tax. You press Control, Command and Space, wait for the Character Viewer to appear, type into a search box that does not always have focus, and double-click a thumbnail. Do that thirty times a day in Slack and Messages and you have spent a few minutes on a thing that should take a second. Droppy's Emoji Picker is a droplet built to make it take a second.

**Direct answer:** switch on Emoji Picker in Droppy's Droplet Store and record a shortcut, or set a text trigger such as a colon. The picker opens where you are typing, in any app. Type to search, press Return, and the emoji is pasted, or copied if you prefer. It keeps recent emoji, applies your preferred skin tone automatically, lets you choose six to ten columns, and accepts your own search labels by right-clicking an emoji.

Search, Return, done. The picker is built for the thirty-times-a-day case, not the once-a-week one.

## What the built-in picker gets wrong

Apple's Character Viewer was designed as a browser for every symbol in Unicode, and it is good at that. It is not good at being fast. It opens slowly, it forgets whether you wanted the compact popover or the full window, its search does not understand the words you would naturally use, and it makes you pick a skin tone every time for emoji that have one. Its shortcut is three keys, one of which many people have rebound to a launcher.

None of that is a bug. It is a general tool asked to do a specific job. The specific job is: I am typing, I want the eyes emoji, I want it now.

## Two ways in

Tap a way in

**Record any chord.** A two-key shortcut is the usual choice. Press it anywhere and the picker opens at your caret, or in the position you set, with the search field focused.

1. Press the shortcut.
2. Type a word: eyes, shrug, party.
3. Return pastes the first match. Arrow keys pick another.

**Type a trigger character.** The Slack habit, everywhere. Set a colon as the trigger and typing it opens the picker with whatever you type next as the search.

1. Type the trigger, then keep typing: colon, then eyes.
2. The picker filters as you go.
3. Return pastes it and cleans up the trigger text.

Both can be on at once. The shortcut is for apps where a colon means something, the trigger is for chat.

## The details that make it habit

## Where it fits beside the rest of Droppy

Emoji Picker used to be a corner of Thunderstorm, the search panel. It became its own droplet in 15.2 beta 1 so it could have its own shortcut, its own trigger, and its own settings, and so that people who never use Thunderstorm could still have a good emoji picker. It follows the rule every droplet follows: switch it on if you want it, leave it off if you do not, and it costs nothing when it is off. The [droplets guide](https://getdroppy.app/blog/droppy-droplets-mac-tools) explains why Droppy is built that way.

It also sits naturally on a [Ring](https://getdroppy.app/blog/ring-radial-menu-mac) button if you would rather flick than press, and its shortcut lives in the rebuilt Shortcuts panel with every other Droppy shortcut, where recording a chord that another app already uses is flagged on the spot.

| | macOS Character Viewer | Droppy Emoji Picker |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Opens with | Control, Command, Space | Any shortcut, or a text trigger |
| Skin tone | Chosen per emoji | Set once, applied everywhere |
| Custom search words | No | Yes, per emoji |
| Recent first | Sometimes | Always |
| Paste or copy | Inserts | Your choice |
| Grid size | Fixed | Six to ten columns |

## A word on the built-in one

Keep it. The Character Viewer is still the right place to find a Unicode arrow, a mathematical symbol or a currency sign you use once a year. Droppy's picker is deliberately only emoji, because that is the thing people reach for thirty times a day, and a tool built for the common case should not be slowed down by the rare one.

## Product verification

**Checked against the current product:** the [Droplet Store](https://getdroppy.app/droplets) entry for Emoji Picker lists the shortcut and text trigger, six to ten columns, the preferred skin tone, custom search labels by right-click, and the paste or copy choice. The standalone droplet with history and configurable shortcuts shipped in [15.2 beta 1](https://getdroppy.app/blog/droppy-15-2-beta-1).
