Apple has put the Dynamic Island on a Mac. It is the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI on the new MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR display, and it works the way it does on an iPhone. That machine starts at $2,899 and reaches stores on November 6.

Droppy has drawn a Dynamic Island on the Mac since version 5.0, on January 9, 2026, ten months before Apple's announcement, and on every Mac rather than one. I build Droppy, so take my side of this with salt. What follows sticks to what Apple announced on October 28 and what Droppy ships today, read on November 2, 2026.

Short answer

**Apple's island** is the place for Spotlight and Siri AI, and it only comes on the new MacBook Pro. **Droppy's island** runs on any Mac and any display, opens Thunderstorm, a launcher that does more than Spotlight, and carries far more: files, clipboard, widgets, music with lyrics, system HUDs, coding agents and more than 40 Droplets, for $9.99 once.

Droppy's island on a display with no notch: glances either side, the full player and shelf a hover away.

## What Apple announced

Apple's island is three things: a place to search your Mac with Spotlight, a place for Live Activities such as accepting an AirDrop request or pausing a song with a tap of your finger, and a place to ask Siri AI questions or take a call. Two catches come with it. Spotlight shows up there only when Siri AI is available and switched on, and Siri AI is a beta in macOS 27.2 in a limited set of languages. And the island comes on exactly one Mac: the 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR display, which is also the first MacBook Pro with Touch.

Apple's announcement says nothing about an island for MacBook Air, the older MacBook Pros, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio or an external display, and nothing about Mac apps adding their own content to it.

## What Droppy's island does

Droppy's island is a surface you put to work. Hover it and it opens into three pages, Home, Tray and Widgets. Home holds Now Playing, your next events and up to four widgets of your choice. Tray is a file shelf you drop anything onto. Live Activities report from the island and sit beside each other, so a timer keeps ticking while a track changes and a download finishes.

Several things at once: what is playing, a coding agent and a timer, each with its own pill.

- **Search, then act on it:** Thunderstorm, Droppy's own launcher, opens out of the island with Option-Space. It finds apps, files, System Settings pages and clipboard history, then moves windows, runs snippets and shell commands, quits or uninstalls apps, converts units and currencies, and chats with AI.
- **Music, properly:** artwork, scrubber, live lyrics, motion artwork from Apple Music and Spotify, a visualizer that follows the real audio, and your Playing Next queue a swipe away.
- **System status:** volume, brightness and keyboard brightness instead of the macOS pop-ups, battery and charging, AirPods, Caps Lock, Focus, external drives with eject, networks and VPN, and screen recording.
- **Files:** drag anything at the island and it opens to take the drop, then send it by AirDrop, Mail, Messages, iCloud Drive or a Droppy Cloud link.
- **Your own widgets:** weather, calendar, notes, Pomodoro, camera, clipboard, system stats and more, from more than 40 Droplets.
- **Work in progress:** Claude, Codex and Cursor report their status, meetings get a call timer and controls, and notifications land in the island with a reply field.

Thunderstorm: a conversion, clipboard history, AI Chat and your meetings in one search.

A message arrives in the island, and you answer it there.

Apple's column counts what Apple announced on October 28, 2026. Apple may add more in later updates.

## Where Apple's island wins

Being honest about it: Apple owns the system. Its island is where Siri AI lives, it answers your calls, and on a display with Touch you can tap it. Search is not one of its wins: Spotlight opens in Apple's island, Thunderstorm opens in Droppy's, and Thunderstorm also acts on what it finds. If you are buying the PROLED MacBook Pro anyway, you get Apple's island for free with a $2,899 laptop, and that is a fine reason to buy it.

## Where Droppy wins

Everywhere else. Droppy's island is on the MacBook Air you already own, the iMac on your desk, the Mac mini under it and the monitor beside your laptop, chosen per display. It holds what you are working on, not only what the system is doing. And it is $9.99 once, not a new Mac.

## If you get the new MacBook Pro

Apple's island lives exactly where Droppy draws its own, and nobody has the machine in hand yet, so I will not promise how the two behave side by side. Droppy lets you pick a style and visibility for each display, and the trial is free for 3 days, so you can see for yourself on the real hardware before paying anything.

## The verdict

- **Buying the PROLED MacBook Pro:** enjoy Apple's island for Siri AI and calls, and try Droppy beside it for everything else, Thunderstorm included.
- **Every other Mac:** Droppy is the way to get a Dynamic Island, and it does more than Apple's, for $9.99 once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Which Mac has Apple's Dynamic Island?**

Only the new MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR display, in 14 and 16 inch, with M5 Pro or M5 Max. It starts at $2,899 and reaches stores on November 6, 2026. Apple has not announced an island for MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio or external displays.

**What does Apple's Dynamic Island do on the Mac?**

Apple calls it the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. You can search your Mac, ask questions, answer calls and control music from it, and Live Activities show things like an AirDrop request. Spotlight appears there only when Siri AI is available and turned on, and Siri AI is a beta in macOS 27.2.

**Did Droppy have a Dynamic Island before Apple?**

Yes. Droppy added its Dynamic Island mode in version 5.0 on January 9, 2026, about ten months before Apple announced its own. It draws the island on any Mac display, including Macs without a notch and external monitors.

**Can I search my Mac from Droppy's island?**

Yes. Thunderstorm, Droppy's own launcher, opens out of the notch or island with Option-Space. It finds apps, files, System Settings pages and clipboard history, and then acts on them: it moves windows, runs snippets and shell commands, quits or uninstalls apps, converts units and currencies, and chats with AI.

**What can Droppy's island do that Apple's cannot?**

Going by what Apple has announced: run on Macs other than the new MacBook Pro, open Thunderstorm, a launcher that acts on what it finds, take files you drop on it and send them by AirDrop, Mail or a share link, hold clipboard history and up to four widgets you choose, show coding agents such as Claude, Codex and Cursor, replace the volume and brightness pop-ups, and let you pick notch or island, size and position for each display.

**Can I use Droppy on the new MacBook Pro with Apple's island?**

Apple's island sits in the same place Droppy draws its own, and the machine only reaches buyers on November 6, 2026. How the two behave side by side is not known yet. If you buy that MacBook Pro, use Droppy's free 3-day trial on it before you pay.

**How much does Droppy cost?**

Droppy costs $9.99 once for 2 Macs, with every update included, a 3-day trial of every feature and a 14-day refund. It runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel, and costs less in 126 countries.
